Rocket, the plant with a dozen names. Stemming from the Mediterranean region and Western Asia, rocket can make any salad feel like it was made in a sunny warm beachy place. You can put it on your pizza or chop it up and add it to fresh tomato sauce on pasta.
This plant is one of our favorites and it's super healthy. Let's get a bit technical: ever wondered what gives this plant its pungent, spicy and sometimes bitter taste? Glucosinolates. This polyphenol will produce mustard oils when the plant is cut and chewed and is very healthy for us as it acts antimicrobial and antibacterial. In medicin, mustard oils are also extracted and used to treat respiratory and urinary tract infections. But Rocket does not only contain mustard oils, it is high in vitamin C, beta-carotin (which our bodies can convert to vitamin A), and it contains folic acid and the valuable minerals potassium and calcium. Due to its iodine content it is also often recommended to eat Rocket when having thyroid hypofunction.
Rocket is also excellent to use in pestos. We love our pestos.
